Math 2890
Summer 2009
Homework
All homework is due at the beginning of class on Thursday. No late homework will be accepted. One homework assignment (the one with lowest score in case you were wondering) will be dropped.
The homework can be done by hand, or using a calculator (handheld or online), or using a computer software program such as MATLAB, Maple or Sage. There are data files for all of the assigned homework available in a variety of formats (MATLAB, Maple, Mathematica, TI-8*) on the text's website. These data files will relieve you of some of the tedium of using calculators and computers; but, be warned, the files do contain some errors.
There are a number of free MATLAB clones available online that should make working from home convenient:
If you're using Windows or a Mac, I recommend FreeMat. If you're using Linux, I recommend Octave. Either of these will work with the MATLAB data files provided by Lay.Some of the problems later in the book will be difficult (or impossible) to do by hand, so I recommend that you become familiar with some technological option as soon as possible.
On the other hand, you'll be forced to do things by hand on the exams. You'll need to understand what's going on under the hood.
